Our Home Planet!

Earth is the planet we all live on — the only place in the whole universe where we KNOW there is life. Every person, animal, and plant you have ever seen lives right here!

The Blue Planet!

Earth looks blue from space because most of it is covered in water — almost three quarters of the whole planet! That is why astronauts call it the "Blue Marble."

A Blanket of Air!

Earth is wrapped in a layer of air called the atmosphere. It gives us oxygen to breathe and keeps us warm, like a cozy blanket around the whole planet.

Day and Night!

Earth spins around like a top! One full spin takes 24 hours — that is why we have day when our side faces the Sun, and night when it faces away.

A Trip Around the Sun!

Earth travels all the way around the Sun once every year — that is 365 days. The long journey is why we have a birthday only once a year!

Why We Have Seasons!

Earth leans a little bit to one side as it travels around the Sun. That tilt is what gives us summer, fall, winter, and spring!

You Are Zooming!

Even when you are sitting still, Earth is racing around the Sun at about 67,000 miles per hour. You are zooming through space right now and cannot even feel it!

Gravity Keeps Us Down!

Earth has a special pull called gravity that keeps everything from floating away — you, your house, the oceans, and the air. Gravity is why a ball always falls back down.

A Giant Magnet!

Deep inside, Earth acts like a giant magnet. This invisible shield protects us from dangerous bits of the Sun — and it also makes compass needles point north!

Dancing Sky Lights!

Near the top and bottom of Earth, glowing green and pink lights sometimes dance in the sky. They are called auroras, and they happen when the Sun's tiny particles bump into our air.

Hot in the Middle!

If you could dig all the way down, you would find Earth is super hot inside — the very center is almost as hot as the surface of the Sun! Good thing it is buried deep down.

Mountains of Fire!

Volcanoes are openings where hot melted rock from deep inside Earth bursts out. The glowing orange rock is called lava, and it can build brand-new land!

The Ground Moves!

Earth's surface is cracked into giant pieces called plates that slowly slide around — about as fast as your fingernails grow. When they bump, we feel earthquakes!

The Tallest Mountain!

The tallest mountain on Earth is Mount Everest. It is so high that the air at the top is too thin to breathe easily — climbers carry tanks of oxygen with them!

The Deepest Spot!

The deepest part of the ocean is so deep you could drop Mount Everest into it and the top would still be underwater! We have explored less of the ocean than the Moon.

Just Right for Life!

Earth is not too hot and not too cold — it is just right for liquid water and living things. Scientists call this comfy zone the "Goldilocks zone," just like the story!
