Biggest Planet!
Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system! You could fit more than 1,000 Earths inside it. It is HUGE!
Super Wide!
Jupiter is 11 times wider than Earth. If Earth were a grape, Jupiter would be a basketball!
Heavy Weight Champion
Jupiter contains more than twice the mass of ALL the other planets in our solar system combined! It is the heavyweight champion of planets!
Far From the Sun
Jupiter is 484 million miles from the Sun. That is so far away that sunlight takes 43 minutes to reach Jupiter! On Earth it only takes 8 minutes.
Shortest Day!
Jupiter has the shortest day of any planet in our solar system. One day on Jupiter is only about 10 hours! It spins really, really fast!
Long Year
One year on Jupiter equals about 12 Earth years! That means if you were 10 on Earth, you would not even be 1 year old on Jupiter!
97 Moons!
Jupiter has 97 known moons! The four biggest ones were discovered by Galileo way back in 1610 using one of the first telescopes ever made.
Giant Moon Ganymede
Jupiter's moon Ganymede is the biggest moon in the entire solar system. It is even bigger than the planet Mercury!
Volcanic Io
Jupiter's moon Io is the most volcanically active place in the entire solar system! It has over 400 volcanoes erupting all the time! In 2025, NASA's Juno spotted the most powerful eruption ever seen there!
Europa's Hidden Ocean
Jupiter's moon Europa has a huge ocean of liquid water hiding under thick ice! Scientists think alien life might swim in that ocean! NASA's Europa Clipper launched in 2024 to investigate!
The Great Red Spot
Jupiter has a giant storm called the Great Red Spot. It is bigger than Earth and has been raging for more than 300 years! Winds inside reach 335 miles per hour! Juno found its roots go 200 miles deep!
No Ground to Stand On!
Jupiter has no solid surface! It is made entirely of swirling gases and liquids. If you tried to land, you would just sink into thicker and thicker clouds!
Almost a Star!
Jupiter is made of the same stuff as the Sun: hydrogen and helium! If it had been about 80 times more massive, it could have become a star instead of a planet!
Biggest Ocean Ever!
Deep inside Jupiter there is the largest ocean in the solar system, but it is not water. It is an ocean made of liquid hydrogen! How cool is that?
Super Magnet!
Jupiter's magnetic field is about 20 times stronger than Earth's! It stretches millions of miles into space. Juno also discovered a mysterious "Great Blue Spot" - an intense magnetic hotspot on Jupiter's equator!
Space Light Show!
Jupiter has spectacular auroras at its north and south poles, just like Earth's Northern Lights but way bigger and more powerful!
Secret Rings!
Jupiter has four rings! They were discovered in 1979 by the Voyager spacecraft. They are very faint and made of tiny dark dust particles, unlike Saturn's bright icy rings.
The Oldest Planet
Jupiter was the first planet to form in our solar system, about 4.6 billion years ago! It formed from the leftover gas and dust after the Sun was born.
Cool Stripes!
Jupiter's colorful stripes are actually clouds of ammonia and water! The dark stripes are called belts and the light ones are called zones. They blow in opposite directions!
Galileo's Discovery
In 1610, the scientist Galileo pointed his telescope at Jupiter and discovered four moons orbiting it. This proved that not everything orbits Earth, changing science forever!
LEGO in Space!
NASA's Juno spacecraft carries three special aluminum LEGO minifigures: the Roman god Jupiter, his wife Juno, and the scientist Galileo! They are orbiting Jupiter right now!
Fuzzy Core!
Scientists used to think Jupiter had a solid rocky core, but Juno discovered it is actually large, fuzzy, and mixed with gas! It is like a giant ball of soup inside!
Polar Storm Patterns!
Juno discovered huge storms swirling around Jupiter's north and south poles in amazing geometric patterns! The north pole has 8 storms arranged in an octagon shape!
Comet Crash!
In 1994, a comet called Shoemaker-Levy 9 broke apart and crashed into Jupiter! The explosions were so big they could be seen from Earth through telescopes! Jupiter's gravity protects Earth from many comets!
Europa Makes Oxygen!
Juno discovered that Europa produces oxygen! Some of it might seep down into the hidden ocean under the ice. This could help feed alien life if it exists there!
Named After a King!
Jupiter is named after the king of the Roman gods - the god of sky and thunder! It is a perfect name for the biggest, most powerful planet in our solar system!
Super Fast Winds!
Jupiter's winds can blow at up to 620 kilometers per hour - that is almost 385 miles per hour! That is faster than the fastest race car on Earth!
